Mentor Match FAQs

Mentor Match FAQs

GENERAL

How does the 1:1 Mentoring Program Work?
Mentors and Mentees complete a short questionnaire to indicate Mentor strengths and opportunities for Mentee development. Mentors and mentees are matched, and the mentoring relationship begins. While our mentoring program is one-to-one, we use a cohort model. Each mentoring group starts its six-month journey together, benefiting from shared mentoring events. The WINiT 1:1 Mentoring Platform will also serve as an ongoing resource for enabling connections to chat, connect, share videos, a resource library, and ultimately schedule meetings and host events.

Who is eligible to join?
This program is only available to GBTA members. If you are not currently a member, please visit gbta.org/membership to participate.

What is the time commitment involved in participation?
After the initial Cohort Kickoff Call, Mentees will work with their Mentor throughout the six-month-long program to set up two 30-minute meetings every month, for a total of 12 one-on-one meetings.

FOR MENTORS

How do I become a Mentor?

Please apply here. You will receive an email within a couple of weeks to let you know if you are eligible to become a Mentor

How will I know if a Mentee has selected me as their Mentor?

You will receive an email from the Mentee requesting you to be their Mentor. You will be prompted to accept or reject the request.

Is it okay to reject a request?

Yes, but there should be a good reason to do so. We encourage you to at least have an initial conversation to explore whether the relationship would be mutually fulfilling. If a potential Mentee has misinterpreted information in your profile, you may find him/her to be an inappropriate match. If you want to decline a request, go to the "My Mentoring Relationships" page and check the “decline” button next to the specific request.

What if I’m going to be on vacation or unavailable for a period of time?

Go to the "Mentor Enrollment" page, click the “Mentor Status” link then click on the check-box next to “Temporarily Not Participating.” Doing this will indicate that you are not accepting any Mentee requests at the moment, and your mentoring profile will not be included in a Mentee’s search for a Mentor.  It is your responsibility to communicate your availability to your existing Mentees.

What are the expectations for participating Mentors?

After completing an initial onboarding, Mentors are expected to be available to meet with their Mentee for 30 minutes at least twice a month.

FOR MENTEES

How do I become a Mentee?

If you are a member, click here to enroll as a Mentee. You will be instructed to choose your preferences for various demographics and also to complete your member profile.

Who are the Mentors?

No, you are allowed to choose only one Mentor.

Can I have more than one Mentor?

While there is no limit to the number of mentoring relationships you can establish, we recommend that you be judicious in selecting only Mentors who are most suited to your mentoring needs. Please keep in mind that Mentors have limited time to offer and may have other Mentoring relationships.

How do I find a Mentor?

Once you have completed your profile, you will find a list of suggested mentors on the GBTA Mentoring page

What should I do if I don’t hear from the Mentor I requested?

If you don't hear from your Mentor within one week of the match, please reach out to winit@gbta.org

How long does the mentoring relationship last?

Connections via our mentoring platform will last six months, though many of the Mentees and Mentors from our program choose to stay connected past the end of their cohort date.
